14 Internal Doors, One Huge Transformation: TG Joinery's Borrowash Project

Some projects stay with you long after the tools have been downed. For Tom at TG Joinery, it's a whole-home renovation in Borrowash, Derby at the beginning of 2026 that sticks with him, where 14 new internal doors and a renovated staircase helped completely change the character of the property.

More Than a Simple Door Replacement

Replacing one internal door can make a surprising difference to a room. Replacing 14 of them, while renovating the staircase at the same time, can change the feel and experience of a home completely, so getting it just right really matters.

"It's one of those jobs I look back on and think what a massive transformation it made," says Tom. "I was really proud of that one."

The Challenge

The Borrowash project was all about affordable quality. Tom's client, Martine, was keen to make the biggest impact style and quality wise, while still getting value for money. As all the doors were being replaced across the entire space as part of a wider renovation project (including living areas, kitchen, downstairs WC and pantry as well as the upstairs bathrooms and en-suites), consistency was really important, too.

Thankfully all of the current door frames were in good condition, but with a relatively short turnaround time of 3 days on-site for fitting the doors, it was clear that prefinished options were going to be the way forward. The aim wasn't simply to fill each opening with a new door. Every choice needed to feel considered and like part of the same makeover.

One Consistent Finish

Using a consistent family and finish of doors throughout a home can really help connect rooms that have otherwise been decorated differently and Tom was on hand to guide Martine on which styles would work together best, as well as where to include glazing to make the most of the space.

Mexicano doors are one of the styles Tom is asked to fit most frequently, describing them as a real customer "go-to", and this is what Martine was drawn to as well. If you're a home owner or developer hoping to recreate a similarly warm, cohesive look quickly, the Climadoor Prefinished Mexicano Oak Doors Tom used are perfect for providing that familiar vertical-groove design without the additional finishing work needed on site.

Where light flow was important, the Climadoor Oak Shaker 4L Clear Glass Doors was also used in the Borrowash project, offering a similar oak appearance to the Mexicano but with four generous glass panels. The consistent finish between ranges makes it possible to introduce similar glazed styles without making the door scheme feel disconnected from the rest of the home.

Tom shares with us that he's fitted other Climadoor styles across different jobs, but he says it's the versatility and favourable pricing of oak Mexicano-style doors that makes them such a popular choice among his customers.

Why Door Lippings Matter

Most homeowners understandably begin with the way a door looks. But a joiner also needs to think about what's happening around its edges.

Thankfully in this case the existing frames were in good condition so minimal adjustments were needed to get the perfect fit, but that's not always how it goes, particularly in older properties. As Tom puts it, some can be "all over the place". Removing and replacing every awkward frame may be possible, but it can quickly turn a relatively straightforward door update into a larger, more disruptive and much more expensive job.

This is where the door lipping becomes important.

"I love the quality of the doors", says Tom. The Climadoor Mexicano has a 20mm lipping and Tom notes "the extra trimming allowance gave me far more flexibility when I was fitting, they've been especially useful in older houses where the frames haven't always been straightforward."

That extra lipping gives an experienced fitter more control and a better chance of achieving an even, professional result without having to replace the frame unnecessarily.

Small Extras Can Make a Big Difference

On a whole-home project, the cost of handles, hinges and other ironmongery can soon add up. Tom highlighted that when the free handle pack promotion is available with qualifying Climadoor doors, it's another practical reason he likes buying through Vibrant Doors.

"The free handle pack has been a real bonus", he says. "It really helps and can save the customer time and money when the deal is on."

For customers ordering several doors at once, an offer like this can create a meaningful saving while making it easier to keep a consistent finish throughout their home too.

Support to Understand the Practical Bits

Even an experienced joiner occasionally needs to confirm a specification or talk through an unusual fitting detail. For Tom, access to a knowledgeable sales team is a valuable part of the service.

"Sam's advice has been invaluable, from answering questions about fire doors, to helping with handle fitting on some of the doors."

For Tom and his team, who live locally, the relationship with Vibrant Doors means the value goes beyond simply receiving a product, he can speak to someone who understands doors and the real fitting questions that arise on site.

The Transformation

With 14 new doors fitted, the Borrowash home gained a far more coordinated and considered interior. Rather than each room feeling like a separate update, the repeated oak detailing helped bring the whole scheme together.

It is exactly the type of project that shows how influential internal doors can be. They're used, seen and touched every day, and when the same design language continues from the hallway to the living spaces and upstairs rooms, the result can feel much more complete.

For Tom though, the proof is in the pudding and it remains one of the jobs he is most proud to look back on, especially as his client was so happy with the end result, too.

Martine, had this to say about her new doors...

"I'm absolutely thrilled with the whole project. The joiner [Tom] was amazing from start to finish, so professional, reliable and clearly takes a huge amount of pride in his work. The standard of workmanship is fantastic and the attention to detail really shows.

The doors themselves are incredible. The quality is outstanding, they look absolutely stunning and they've made such a difference to the whole house. They've given it a much more modern, updated feel and have completely transformed the space.

I'm genuinely so pleased with the finished result. An absolutely fantastic job from start to finish!"

Meet Tom from TG Joinery

Tom's route into the trade began with an apprenticeship after leaving school. As his experience grew, he started taking on private jobs alongside his employed role, with internal door fitting quickly becoming one of the services local customers requested most often.

Recommendations led to more recommendations, while Instagram and Facebook helped his work reach new customers around Derby. By April 2025, his workload had grown enough for him to take TG Joinery full-time.

He hasn't regretted it. "I've stayed busy and never looked back", he says.

Today, Tom works on everything from individual door replacements to larger home renovations. Wooden staircases are another major part of his work, which made the Borrowash project an ideal opportunity to bring two sides of his expertise together.
